Welcome and thank you for reading my contributions on HorsemansCorner.com.
My name is Janice Jones and I am a British born Texan.
Growing up on a farm in Electra, Texas I played with chickens, milked cows, made butter and helped my Granddad on his tractor. The only horse on the place was a palomino gelding named Honey. I thought he was the most beautiful horse I had ever seen and of course, he made a lasting impression on me.
Another horse didn’t come along until my daughter was about 8 years old. She wanted to learn to ride and I probably wanted that horse more than she did. Our first one was a very stout Quarter Horse with Doc Bar lineage. We called her Target, as her registered name was Bessie Pine Target and she was as wide as a barn door. As my daughter’s riding improved, we acquired a western pleasure horse named “Jacks Rum and Coke” a beautiful palomino, just like the one I remembered. His sire was “The Investor”, a well-known western pleasure horse. We were very fortunate to find him. Jack could do all the moves that were required at the horse shows and then some. He was a great horse and he knew he was special. When we went to bring him home, we only had a small two horse side-by-side trailer that had been just fine for Target; but when we arrived to pick up Jack, he thought otherwise. He would not get in that old trailer and you could just tell he had been accustomed to better things. So we borrowed a stock trailer and got him home. We then bought him a brand new two-horse slant Sundowner and he loved it. He was a grand old gentleman and loved all the neighborhood children. He became our forever horse just like Target.
We have learned a lot along the way. Horse keeping is not for the weak or faint of heart. It’s a lot of work but also very rewarding and lots of fun.
At the moment, we have seven horses. The oldest one is Target’s daughter, Nellie and then her daughter, Prissy. Pilot is our 8 year old Thoroughbred; Tesla is a perlino Quarter Horse; Ammo is a yearling Quarter Horse and we have one mini and one little Hackney pony.
Hopefully there will be two more in the Spring, just maybe a palomino.
